Week 5 Analysis: close reading of miller

The story I am doing a closer analysis on is "Californian" (232-234) by Jaoquin Miller. The plot of this story basically is about her point of view of coming to California. She is on a boat at sea on her way to California. It speaks of sails that spread and come from around the world. In this story the literary device that is thoroughly built is character. The character is speaking from her experience, so we can see what he has been through. The way she has been through long travels, and the experience of coming to a new land. It shows her character in this story, and i feel this is very important when it comes to this story. The next important thing is to speak of the theme of this story. The theme of this story is how traveling long distances can be treacherous, but it can shape who you are. She sees what its like in California during the Gold Rush. She can hear the thundering of pickaxes throughout the base of the mountain, and I feel this is a part that is a real character defining moment. The important historical element to me is the amount of people who were coming to California to become gold miners. When she explains how many ships were on their way to California was shocking to me. It was really a thought that if you were on your way to California that you would find riches. Also, there were so many people that were already in California mining and trying to get their riches. Gold was a huge part of our history, and was known to everyone. I feel as if it was less popular more people would've actually achieved their dreams, however, it became an over saturated way to make more money.

  1. Hello Evan, I enjoyed reading your close reading of this story. There is a lot of personal connection being that the author is telling a personal story and with that, I think it brings many emotions to the reader. You bring up good points about the character-defining the moment and it is because of the different experiences the author goes through that builds her character.

  2. Hi Evan,
I would assume that character development is a big part of this autobiographical tale. The way the long arduous trip unfolded can build and reveal character. Personal experiences tend to inform the reader of changes that take place in the character from the experience. You explain the theme as being the discovery of how treacherous long travel can shape a person. Can it also be said that the theme may be that many people from around the world converged on the California gold country in search for fortune? You do mention the idea that many people believed that if you get to California you would find riches. I am assuming that was the reason the author traveled there too.

  3. Hi Evan,
I enjoyed reading your analysis of this piece. The journey Westward would undoubtedly play a big part in defining ones character including the initial decision to make such an arduous journey. I think it shows just how desperate a lot of the population was that they would risk so much just for a chance to find gold. This was never a guarantee so the risks they took to get there would be a tough call to make. I would also say perhaps that the way each person interprets their struggles in potentially finding gold would also define their character. Were they successful? If so, how did this change who they were as a person? Were they unsuccessful and if so, did they let this failure define them completely or were they able to recover and find happiness in another venture? Well done!

  4. Hello Evan! I really enjoyed reading your analysis of California. I also believe that the character is the device that would stand out the most. So many people sought opportunity by heading to California because of the Gold Rush, so its interesting to see it from someone's point of view rather than the view of a textbook. Awesome job on the post!
