Reading Notes W7: Dorothy and the Wizard of Oz, Part B

Dorothy and the Wizard of Oz, pg 347-353

  • This starts off with setting the scene of being in San Francisco, and how the train from San Francisco is late.
  • On the train it described a little girl rose, she was carrying a wicker suit0case in one hand and also had a covered up bird cage. 
  • This little girl ended up being Dorothy, a character we are all very familiar with.
  • Someone starts asking her about her birds, but it turns out to just be her kitten, Eureka.
  • It then goes to her talking to someone else, and someone who is riding a horse.
  • As they are riding the horse, out of no where, a the ground splits right under the horses feet. 
  • It then starts to talk about the Glass City. She seemed to have passed out, but they in turn were still falling once she came back.
  • Dorothy then realizes after falling for a while that she, as far as she knows, is in the middle of the earth, and it is definitely confusing for her.

    Hey Evan, these notes you took are very good! You really laid out the basic plot of the story and the amount. I do think that if you included a little bit more about the theme of the story it could really help your analysis, great job!

    Heya, Evan! I really like these notes you took, as they helped me understand the basic plot of the story perfectly! I would like a bit more of an analysis on the theme, and the true meaning of the story, rather than just surface level content. Dig deeper man!

Week 4 Analysis: Sarah Eleanor Royce

This was a very interesting, yet dull story, however, I thoroughly enjoyed it. I first want to talk about the literary devices I am going to use, that is mainly plot and setting. The plot of this story was very straight forward, yet very engaging. The story basically explained their trip to California in search of gold to become rich, it also highlighted the struggles of doing so. When they reached California, the initial place they were planning to pan for gold was all washed up, so they had to move to a place where they were constantly in fear of Native Americans hunting them down. Eventually they were out of this place, opened a shop, and were able to live a long life. The setting of this was in California during the Gold Rush. When reading this, you get an insight on what it was like being alive during this time from a first hand account. The theme of this, to me, is that life is never simple, you may go for a simple task, and have many hardships down the road. What I mean by this ...

Project Brainstorm

Topic 1: p ick a subject: love, work, freedom, etc. Then choose two selections and discuss how that subject is discussed in those selections. Use literary devices to help frame your discussi on.   The reason I would choose this subject is because of the opportunity that writing this has. What I mean by this is they are very open subjects that speak volumes to me. Using literary devices I can most definitely meet the requirements for the posts when speaking about love, work, and freedom. To me, I feel they even all tie together which is why I feel a connection to it.
